Dear Rosa,

Celebrating with family is what summer and of course 4th of July are all about.  I am celebrating this week at our biannual family reunion with most of my family at Sunset Beach.  I had to take this photograph because I don't think in all of my years of going to the beach I have ever seen such a crowd.
In trying to accommodate 28 of us into both sides of a duplex,  I started to think of our bedrooms, how we use our spaces and what makes them special to us. This was my inspiration for the July edition of Visions.  So whether the room is for kids,  young adults, boomerangs or simply the guest room I will give you a guide for planning this special place we all like to call our own.

Enjoy!

Please feel free to call me a 704-362-1397 or contact me at rosa@rosadestinteriors.com  with any questions or comments.

Enjoy!

                              Our Bedrooms
           Creating that special Haven

In creating the beautiful and special havens we refer to as our bedrooms there are four elements to consider.  I will give you a guide to either grow with your child or transition you into the next phase of life.

                                      Room Size

The first consideration should always be the size of your room.  Regardless of whom you are decorating it for, the size will affect everything you do.  From the size of the furniture to the colors you select.

If you are dealing with a small space, you have to consider exactly what the space will be used for so that you may buy the appropriate furniture and plan accordingly.  I think the following photographs are two wonderful examples of maximizing a small space.  This is how I imagine people in Manhattan must live.

Furniture by Turmidei

Besides being functional, Tumidei made the above furniture very cool and fashionable.

Below, you can see how using light and dark will make  a small bedroom look spacious.  Notice the balance between the light and dark colors.  To keep the room looking light and airy, more neutral colors were used.

                                         Lighting

This room is a perfect example of how light affects a room.  Whether it's the natural light that comes in through the windows or the use of lights in the overhead fixture, table lamps or bedside lamps.
In designing a room the trick is not to just select one element of design but to incorporate all of them.  This room is a perfect example of function (sleeping and work area);  mood ( sets a peaceful and restful mood); and harmony (the neutral colors in the fabrics and walls harmonize with the dark accent colors used in the architectural molding, and the accent pieces).
Remember, layer your lights to accomplish adequate lighting. Your layer should consist of ambient or general light, accent lights and task lighting.

                                       COLOR

TO use OR not to use??
That is totally a personal question and because they are our personal spaces, we are the only ones that can answer that.

This room from Elle Decore in the Hamptons features a bedroom that would be a wonderful guest bedroom.  The colors make it cheerful and inviting.
A guest room should always have a comfortable bed, with an assortment of flat and fluffy pillows.  A bedside table can accommodate a lamp for reading, candles and fresh flowers.  Placing  a chair or chaise lounge is essential for relaxing, and a luggage rack  will spare your bedding from the soil on traveling suitcases.

This stunning bedroom done in turquoise blue with orange accents shows the use of color in a harmonious way and makes a delightful and fresh guest room.

Below, you can see how using color can jazz up a room.  By combining turquoise blue with green and adding touches of black this bedroom has a punch of sas.

                                        Mood

Our bedrooms are a place to relax and recharge, a stylish and peaceful retreat.

By creating spaces within a space to read or retreat, our personal spaces become our special places.

Whatever your bedrooms' needs may be, remember to keep size,  lighting and your color selection in mind when creating the mood you want to achieve in your personal space.
