Dear Rosa,
Happy Mothers Day! My warmest wishes to all of the moms out there. Being a mom is one of the most difficult jobs, but it is the most important one we as women can do. One of my greatest joys are my children and as I approach becoming an "empty nester", it is one I cherish even more. Blessings to all of you and I wish you a very Happy Mothers Day.
As most of you know, I was invited to participate in the Charlotte Symphony Guild Designer House, so in this month's edition of Visions I will attempt to walk you through what goes into the making of a room in the show house. If you've had a chance to visit - Thank You and I hope you enjoyed it. For those of you who have not had a chance to visit the Designer house, you still have one week left. It re-opens Wednesday May 5th from 10:00am to 8:00 pm until Sunday May 9th, 1:00-6:00pm. I look forward to seeing you.
Please feel free to call me a 704-362-1397 or contact me at rosa@rosadestinteriors.com with any questions or comments.
Enjoy!

LET'S MEET AT THE MET!!! 1225 Baxter St. off Kings Dr. www.charlottesymphonyguild.org
It all started last November when I received an invitation to participate in Charlotte's prestigious Symphony Guild Designer House. I was thrilled and honored to have been invited.
The selection of the spaces was held in December and the rooms were assigned through a lottery. My planning began immediately and the room design was submitted for approval in early January. It was a very quick process because our move in dates were early April and of course we opened on the 17th.
Three units at the Met Terraces where made available to us and my room is the den in Unit 309 designed for the Transitional Urban Family. With that being said, my design concept was to create a space with someone in mind who would be downsizing and wanting to use their existing furniture and the treasures they had gathered through life. I wanted the space to feel livable and express the lifestyle of my clients.
The space was designed with a fresh approach to classic uninhibited elegance.

In creating the den I faced two challenges: One being no windows to provide natural light and the other being no overhead lighting. To solve this dilemma, I worked with my friend and reliable faux finisher Amy Sullivan. I selected the colors I wanted to use in order to lighten the space. We decided on a venetian plaster and added a metalic finish to help reflect light in the room. The walls and ceiling painted with an "Oyster Affect" remind one of the inside of an oyster shell. By adding a glass iron coffee table, several lamps and up-lighting the dark corners, the room came alive.

The French furniture used was upholstered with fresh new fabrics from Brunschwig & Fils. The scale of the furniture allowed the room work. By adding a new piece, the custom made glass iron table and using old favorite antiques like the English copper samouvoir (Windwood Antiques) as a vase to hold fresh flowers the room became the perfect place to read, watch tv, play a game of cards or simply relax.
In this photograph, you can really appreciate the finish on the walls.
Because no room is complete without beautiful paintings. I commissioned artist Andy Braitman, Susan Matthews and Diane Virkler to do their magic. By sharing the fabric colors and the feel of the room I wanted to accomplish with the artist, they each created fabulous pieces that complemented the space.
The painting by Andy Braitman titled "Casa D'Bonvechio" was the focal point in the den.
 "Montiechiello", Susan Matthews
 "Atlantic Fishing Village", Diane Virkler
We all tend to acquire treasures throughout our lives that become important to us. Whether they be Mother's day gifts from children or special pieces from our travels.
Why do we love certain houses, and why do they seem to love us? It is the warmth of our individual hearts reflected in our surroundings. -T. H. Robsjohn-Gibbings
Accessories are what bring our rooms together, express our personalities and reflect our lifestyles.

"Wild Ride", ceramic by Shelley & Michael Buonaivto (Red Sky Gallery). Sitting on the game table next to the wine was the perfect place to sit this piece of pottery. This whimsical pottery became a conversational piece.
Adding fresh flowers always brings pleasure to life.
German antique wallpaper roller converted into a lamp. Giving new life to an old piece, by converting the roller to a lamp and adding a drum shade made this piece one of a kind.
Antique candlesticks from Florence Small details on an antique chair. Adding old pieces and a touch of new, was what it took to accomplish the design concept I started out with.
No room is finished until the last detail is placed!
