Dear Rosa,
Spring is in the air and in my opinion it can't get here fast enough. I am so ready for warm weather and the freshness of spring. This month I am really happy to introduce Julie Cofield as a new addition to Rosa Dest Interior Designs. Julie graduated from Harrington College of Design in Chicago. She will be working with me as an intern and I am looking forward to sharing my knowledge and experience with her as well as learning from her. Please join me in welcoming Julie Cofield to our team.

Many of you often wonder why use an interior designer? What can she/he do for me that I haven't already learned on HGTV? In this issue of Visions I will tackle some of those reasons. We have all been hearing that wallpaper has made a comeback, Julie has contributed an article on the latest styles of wallpapers adorning our walls. In Color with Confidence we learn how to spread the wealth of Turquoise and in Eco-Chic we discuss the different qualities that make low and no VOC paints desirable.
Have an awesome month and feel free to call me a 704-362-1397 or contact me at rosa@rosadestinteriors.com with any questions or comments.
Enjoy!

Why Hire an Interior Designer?
Have you ever wished I could come over and just wave my magic wand over your entire house and make it beautiful?
We all know that is impossible but what is possible with the help of an interior designer is to have your home be a place that reflects you own personal taste and lifestyle.
Since your home is the highest valued purchase you make in your lifetime, can you afford to make the wrong decisions? Your home is your haven, the place you show off to your friends and family. It is where you can relax in comfort and entertain in style. Most homeowners find that they save money by hiring an interior designer. By providing the level of quality you desire in your home within your budget we guide you and avoid costly mistakes. We have an extensive network of resources to handle every aspect of the design project.
An interior designer works specifically with your needs in mind to achieve the look that you are after while providing a safe, functional and beautifully designed home.
A kitchen remodel is a beautiful example of how a designer can work with a homeowner to transform and update the heart of your home. We worked with the homeowner in the space planning of their kitchen (seen below), as well as coordinating the selection of the cabinets and their finish, the granite, and the back splash. By redesigning the configuration of the appliances, the kitchen became a more functional space. Lighting was added, floors were refinished in a complementing stain and details completed the kitchen. It's Back and it's Hot
Some people say wallpaper is out, but the truth is it never really left. Since Oprah announced on her show in 2009 that wallpaper is back, it has been hot, hot, hot! The wallpaper of this millennium is hip, graphic and technology driven. These are not words we would have associated with our grandmothers' wallpaper. Boutique paper & fabric firms like the UK based Romo www.romo.com (whose lines include a dramatic array of flocked wallpaper as well as exotic flora's, stripes and contemporary damasks) and Larsen www.larsenfabrics.com (whose line includes textured weaves, grass clothes and prints) have nothing to do with the fruit and daisy prints of your grandma's era.

House & Garden
Don't limit yourself to thinking you can only apply wallpaper to your walls, apply it to your ceilings as well. That's right, your ceilings. When applied to both the walls and the ceiling it creates one seamless element. By applying wallpaper only to your ceiling can create a bold design statement as well as adding an unexpected surprise.

When it comes to stripes, use them to the advantage of your space. Apply them horizontally to help widen a long hallway or provide a fresh take on the traditional horizontal stripe. Applied vertically stripes will give a room with a low ceiling the appearance of height.

Forget paint chips; stamp your personality on your space with amazing wallpaper. I promise you will never look at your walls the same way again.

Accents of Turquoise
I recently attended a program at Wing Haven to hear a friend of mine, Sharon Hockfield speak on Designing for the Do-It-Yourself Gardeners. Sharon is a garden designer and consultant in Charlotte, (she can be reached at plantinplans@bellsouth.net). As I was listening to Sharon I had an Ah-hah moment that I thought would be worth sharing. We have talked about turquoise in our homes and how it can be used with colors that complement each other. As spring approaches and we start thinking about our gardens, adding a touch of turquoise outside would be a great way to make a dull spot on your patio or in your garden POP. Why not apply what we can do inside our homes to the outside. A turquoise planter retro-fitted with a water feature and placed outside of your window would make a soothing addition to your home.

Consider a turquoise garden stool in your screened porch, patio or used as a side table inside your home. I like a company called Emissary, www.emissayusa.com, they have a beautiful variety of garden stools, planters and accessories. This website is available through the trade only, so if you see something you love let us know and we'll be happy to order it for you.

What's so great about Low or No VOC Paints?
With all the talk about low VOC paints, if I'm going to "talk the talk", I better "walk the walk". I did just that on a personal project ( I always like to try things out before I reccomend them). For those of you who may not remember what VOC stands for, it is Volatile Organic Compounds. In other words the toxic vapors that products off-gas and affect indoor air quality.
Some example:
Benjamin Moore's, Eco Spec
This is a water base paint, available in an unlimited pallette of beautiful colors and full color-matching capability. It dries fast with minimal odor so that the space is available to be used the same day. Eco spec is available in flat, eggshell, semi-gloss and primer. This is the paint I used in my daughters bedroom ( I will share pictures in another issue when the room is complete). The painters arrived at 8 am, the job was finished by 1 pm. She slept in her room that night without any trace of paint fumes. www.benjaminmoore.com
Sherwin Williams, Harmony
Harmony, has similar qualities to Eco Spec. It has zero VOC and no odor. It can be applied in occupied rooms without causing disruption. It is anti-microbial (great quality in kids rooms, laundry rooms and bathrooms) It is also available in flat, eggshell, semi-gloss and primers.www.sherwinwilliams.com
Stark
Colours by David Oliver for Stark is a contemporary palette of 240 colors, all water based with zero VOC. Colours is a high quality designer product that is environmentally responsible. It is available in three finishes, Velvet Emulsion, Porcelain Shell and Lacquer Gloss. www.starkcarpet.com
We will be happy to help you make the right color selections www.rosadestinteriors.com. These paints are priced about $50.00/gallon, given the benefits to us and the environment, they are worth the investment.
