VISIONS   "Designing Interiors with a Vision"

 September  2009

Rosa Plaza Dest
Dear Friend,

Summer is one of my very favorite times of the year.  For me it is a time to spend with my family, travel as much as possible and work a little less.  With that being said, my daughter and I had a week of  very successful college visits.  We visited 5 schools anddrove as far as Boston.  We were able to visit with family and have plenty of together time because there was a lot of traffic on I-95.  She did eliminate four out of the five schools we visited and has decided to apply to American University in DC and Chapel Hill.  We will be empty nesters next fall, WOW!

I hope you have had a restfull summer, had the opportunity to do everything you wanted to,  and to simply make time to relax!
Now we can look forward to the beauty of the Fall and get back to our routines.

In this issue of Visions I would like to offer "7 pointers" to consider before investing in your next rug.  I have been working with a couple of clients who are decorating  new rooms in their homes.  As designers we always begin by selecting that piece which will give our rooms a feeling of being grounded.  Rugs are used as accents, to complement other types of flooring or as a focal point.  They can range from subtly nuanced to being bold and dramatic.

Thank you for the wonderful responses to my last e-zine on Colombia, many of you commented on the beauty of the country and the different styles of the interiors.  If you are new to my e-zines and would like to see that issue, you can find it and the previous ones on my website.www.rosadestinteriors.com

Now, let's talk about rugs.

A Rug Forever

                  "7 Pointers before you Buy"

Rugs are used as accents, as a complement to other types of flooring or as a focal point.  Therefore, the rug you choose to invest in must be one you 'marry your room too'.  Fall in love with what you choose!

1. Rugs rule.  The rug is the largest focus in a room, it sets the tone for how the room should flow.  Rugs are Art, they are comfort and they should complement the fabrics in the room.

2.  How will this room be used?  Always consider how this room is going to be used, this will determine your investment.  Keep in mind a few things before you buy:  Is the room subject to a lot of activity?  Are there young children? Pets?

3.  Small room vs. a Larger room.    A vibrant rug can overpower a small space.  Don't be afraid to layer, a neutral less expensive rug can encompass the floor space of a room and a smaller Oriental rug on top will make it dramatic.  If you happen to live in a MacMansion  and your room is huge, consider defining different spaces within the room by selecting complementing rugs.  Rugs in different sizes and textures will keep the room interesting.

4.  Determining the best rug size for your room.  To make a small room  feel more spacious leave a border of about 6-8 inches of exposed floor around the room.  For a larger room, depending on the look you are trying to accomplish a border of 12 inches or more of exposed flooring may be allowed.
.
5.  Furniture Placement?    Is it ok. to have my sofa sit on the floor and not the rug?  Sure, but I like to see a rug large enough to have at least the front legs of the sofa or a large chair sitting on it.  Your other option would be a rug large enough to have all of your furniture pieces sitting on it.

6.  What about the Dining Room?  The rug needs to be 2 feet larger than the dining table on every side when the leaves are not in use.  This allows the diner to pull his/her chair back and remain on the rug.

7.  Combining Color and Pattern.  Vary the scale in the pattern and complement the color.  If patterns are too similar in scale they compete for your eye.  Use color and textures as a complement to your rugs.

Too Many Choices

There is so much to pick from, what are my choices?  That is strictly up to you.

Sisal & Sea grass.  They are natural and neutral, fiber floor coverings.  They are not suited for kitchens or baths because of their susceptibility to mildew.  While they feel nice underfoot, however are uncomfortable for lounging.  A sisal wool blend gives you the look of sisal with the feel of wool.  Sea grass is slightly more stain resistant than sisal.

Asisal blend in a breakfast area.  As a blend a sisal rug is more stain resistant than one without a blend.

Oriental Rugs. An authentic Oriental rug is handmade with pure organic wools and each knot is hand knotted and tied.  It is either woven with pile or woven without pile. They come from broad geographical regions.
Geometric Design rugs are called Serapi, Kazak and Heriz, while more floral patterns are Oushak, Tabriz, Mahal and Sarouk.  These rugs either have a field type of all-over or a medallion.

Machine Woven Rugs.  These rugs are not woven by hand but loomed by a computer generated system or aparatus.  There are no knots in a machine woven rug and the threads are glued or looped into a hot latex backing.  Acrylic and other chemically processed materials are usually used to make machine-made carpets.

This rug used in bathroom is an example of a machine woven rug made to resemble an oriental rug.  The colors are earthy and muted and it complements the tiles beautifully.

There are numerous types of rugs available so let your imagination go or give me a call and I will be happy to help you find just the right one.

Because my industry is an everchanging one,  I am constantly taking classes to learn as much as possible about all of the new and existing products available to my clients.  Below is a photograph of myself and Larry Bell, an industry partner known for his knowledge of Oriental rugs.

                   Back to You!

"Life isn't about finding yourself.  Life is about creating yourself.  Embrace the masterpiece within you."
 Melissa Galt

The kids have gone back to school and life is becoming more of a routine.  Are there projects you have been putting off, a few things you would like to get done before Christmas or your next child graduates? Now is the time to start thinking about it.  Big or small - make those changes you have been putting off.

I wish all of you a great Labor Day weekend, may you enjoy it to the fullest with your loved ones.
We will be celebrating a long awaited visit from our son in Colombia.  This month I will be seeing our middle son off to Brazil for a semester abroad and also celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary.  WOW! Can you believe that?  Thank you Libby Davis for introducing Rich and I many, many moons ago, and to our family, friends, clients and patients for your loving support.
